Chapter 1

Sayir Slain wanted a man who would never want her back, and she had two years of college left to close the deal. She sat in the glass pavilion at the center of campus, her tattoos bare under the lights, a finance midterm face-down on the table. Every head that turned turned for the surface. The clothes, the ink, the aura. Nobody ever looked past it. She told herself the plan was simple. Graduate. Model. Then walk into the reclusive billionaire's world and become the one woman he couldn't ignore, the one who broke a vow he'd made never to fall again. The problem was that nobody asked her anything real. Admiration slid off her armor and left her alone inside it. A cup landed across from her. Black coffee, no cream. The man who set it down didn't sit until she looked up. "Kaito," he said. "You're in my finance section." She knew the name. Everyone did. Vance money built half the racing circuit in the country. She waited for the usual thing, the once-over, the compliment that meant nothing. Instead he tapped her midterm. "You aced it. Highest score. So why do you look like you lost?" The question caught her off guard. She gave her usual answer, the smooth one. "Long night." "No," Kaito said. Flat. No apology. "That's the answer you give people who don't matter. I asked why you look like winning made you sad." Sayir set down her cup. For the first time in months, her hands felt exposed. "Most people ask about the tattoos." "I don't care about the tattoos." He pulled out the chair and sat. "People see the Vance name before they see me. I figure you've got the same problem, just wearing a different jacket." She studied him. He wasn't looking at her the way men looked at her. He was waiting, like her answer was worth the wait. It scared her more than any crowd ever had. "I have a plan," she said slowly. "A big one. It doesn't leave room for someone who asks hard questions." "Then it's a bad plan," Kaito said. He drank his coffee. "Or the wrong one." She wanted to argue. She couldn't. Her whole strategy rested on being wanted at a distance, on staying behind the shine. Kaito had walked straight through it in under a minute. He didn't want to admire her. He wanted to know her. That was the one thing her armor was built to prevent. "I have to go," she said, standing too fast. "Sayir." He didn't reach for her. "Same table. Tomorrow. I'll bring the coffee." She left without answering. Outside the glass, she stopped and pressed a hand to her chest. Her plan was still there, whole, the billionaire and the runway and the vow she meant to break. But now a second want sat beside it, small and dangerous. Someone had asked the real question. And she wanted to come back and answer it.
