Chapter 1

Sazarak Coldscale climbed the bamboo steps of the training temple with a steel sword he already knew would break. He had carried the blade for two years across the wet roads of Pitchfen, sleeping in reed huts and paying for lessons no real master would give him. He was a lizard, and lizards did not study the cut that kills spells. He had been told this at thirteen, the night he watched a stranger slice a mage's fire out of the air like cloth. He had been chasing that stranger's style ever since, even after every teacher swore the style was dead. The temple judged blades. That was its only purpose. Inside the front hall, a small green dinosaur in a clerk's vest took his name and his coin and waved him toward the testing floor. The dinosaur's tail thumped the boards as it walked. It did not look at his sword. It had seen too many like it. The testing floor was a square of packed sand under a high bamboo roof. At the far end stood a stone post carved with an old mark Sazarak had seen only once before, on the cover of a weathered book a junk dealer had sold him for three coppers: a sword crossed over a spiral. The book had called itself a guide for fighting magic with a blade. The same mark was here, cut deep into the post and worn soft by rain. Someone had practiced the forbidden style in this place, long ago. No one in the temple would say so. A robed examiner stepped onto the sand and lifted one hand. A small spell formed above her palm, a slow knot of light the size of a fist. She flicked it toward him at walking speed. The rule was simple. Cut it, or fail. Sazarak set his feet and swung. The steel met the spell and screamed. White light ran up the blade and into the guard. The sword broke in three places before the spell even finished crossing the room. The hilt jumped from his hand. A shard buried itself in the post beside the old carved mark. What hit the sand looked nothing like a sword anymore: a black, cracked length of metal veined with cooling orange, the cross-guard warped into curling spikes, a dull green stone seated in the pommel where no stone had been that morning. The spell had not just broken his blade. It had rewritten it. The examiner lowered her hand. From the rafters, three small winged shapes with mushroom-cap heads drifted down to study the ruined thing in the sand, whispering in a language he did not know. The dinosaur clerk wrote one line in a ledger and closed the book. "Common steel cannot test here," the examiner said. "Bring a blade that can hold a spell, or do not come back." Sazarak picked up the warped, eye-marked weapon by its twisted grip. It was warm. It was watching him. He did not yet know whose it had become.
