Chapter 25
Rain hammered the clinic roof as Scott set Malik on the metal exam table. Deaton was already moving, sleeves rolled, a ring of soot-gray ash spread across the back room floor. Derek stood at the door. Kira's hands sparked at her sides, restless.
"If you want to understand the Acheron, you have to step into its house," Deaton said. He laid Scott's coin at the north edge of the ash. He pressed Malik's marked palm flat beside it. Then he held up a clear crystal jar. "Kira. Breathe into this. Slow."
Kira cupped the jar. Orange light folded inward, layer on layer, until the glass held a small captive sunrise. Deaton set it at the center of the circle. He looked at Scott. "You and Malik. Hands on the jar. Don't let go on the other side."
The ash hissed. The floor dropped away. Scott opened his eyes to a flooded street he knew — his street — water past his ankles, sky the color of bruises. Malik stood beside him, whole again, no gauze. They walked. Memories drifted in the current like wreckage. Allison, going still in his arms. Lydia, pounding the inside of Eichen House walls, mouth open in a scream he couldn't hear. Stiles, head tilted, wearing the Nogitsune's slow dark grin. Each one flickered as they passed.
The street ended at a black shore. The water shivered. A tall shape rose out of the river, shoulders first, face shifting — his mother, then Allison, then Stiles. Scott felt the pull behind his ribs, hard as a hook. Malik stepped in front of him. "Don't listen to it," Malik said. "Whatever voice it picks, it isn't theirs."
In the clinic, Deaton watched their bodies go still over the glowing jar. Kira reached for Scott's wrist and Derek caught her hand. "Leave them," Deaton said quietly. "They're across now. We hold the threshold until they come back." Rain kept falling. The ash circle held. On the far shore, the Acheron opened a mouth full of borrowed voices — and Scott, for the first time, was standing inside its house.
