Chapter 11
Draven flew home to the south. Seraphina stayed in the frozen north. The crater was dead, her land was safe, and one task remained. She had mastered the shift and the binding door. Now she had to learn the elder spell, the magic that would make her a full dragon at will. She climbed the frost-carved stairs to the ice dragon queen's den. Icicles hung from every ledge like teeth. She would master this alone. Draven would not anchor her again.
Glaciana waited inside, her white hair spilling over crystal scales. She had taught Seraphina to grip the beast through feeling instead of fear. Her blue eyes moved to Seraphina's chest, where the pendant's light glowed under her skin. "You brought the fire I gave you," Glaciana said. "Good. It will fight you now."
"It flares whenever I reach for the spell," Seraphina said. "I can't hold the words and the light at the same time."
"Then stop reaching," Glaciana said. "The light is not a tool you grab. It is you. Show me."
Seraphina knelt on the cold stone. She spoke the first line of the elder spell. The moment the words left her, the light in her chest burned white and clawed upward. Her breath caught. The heat spread down her arms and cracked against the beast behind its door. She grabbed for control the old way, and the light flared harder. Pain doubled her over.
"You are fighting it," Glaciana said. She did not move to help. "You fight everything. That is why it burns."
Seraphina gasped. Her palms glowed hot enough to melt the frost beneath them. She remembered the crater, how she had held the beast shut with one hand while the fire poured from the other. She had not fought then. She had let both live in her at once.
She stopped pulling. She let the light rise on its own. Instead of gripping it, she breathed with it, matched her heartbeat to its pulse. The burning slowed. The white glow softened to a steady warmth under her ribs. It stopped clawing and settled, calm, like a second heart beating in time with her first.
"Now," Glaciana said. "Speak."
Seraphina said the first line again. The light held steady. She said the second. Her scales spread across her arms, and no flare came, no pain, only warmth flowing outward. She stopped there, shaking, and let the words fall silent. The light glowed calm in her chest.
"You calmed it," Glaciana said. She almost smiled. "The fire will not fight you again. That was the wall. It is down."
Seraphina sat back, breathing slow. The block that had stopped her cold was gone. She could reach the spell now without the light tearing at her.
"How much of the spell is there?" she asked.
"Long," Glaciana said. "You learned to hold the fire. Now you must learn the shape. That is the last work."
