Chapter 4

Seraphina left the ice queen's den knowing she could grip the beast. But gripping was not shifting. She had never held a full change from start to end. If her hold slipped mid-shift, the beast would tear loose wrong. She needed clean ground to test it. Draven flew her south on the wingcat, past the corrupted north, to a bare field far from the poison. They landed in short grass. Draven slid down and stood close. "Here," he said. "Clean soil. No vapor." He gripped his sword and watched her. Seraphina lifted the pendant from her chest. The center stone woke. Light spilled from it and ran up her arm. The clawing thing surged at once, harder than in the den. Her scales rose along her jaw. Heat and cold fought under her skin. This time she did not just hold. She opened the door. The shift took her. Her bones bent. Wings pushed from her back and split the air. Her hands grew long and clawed. Pain rolled through her spine. Halfway through, the beast lunged for the gap and tried to rip the change out of her control. Her vision went white. Panic spiked. The hold cracked. "Anchor," Draven said. "Look at me." She found his red eyes through the light. She stopped fighting the fear and closed her fist around it. She fixed on his face, on the grass under her claws, on her own breath. The beast pressed the gap. She pressed back. The crack sealed. The shift finished on her terms. Seraphina stood full dragon in the field. White scales ran the length of her body. Her wings stretched wide. The pendant glowed steady at her throat. The beast pulled once, then settled under her grip. She held the form. One breath. Ten. A hundred. It did not tear loose. She lowered her head, closed her eyes, and willed the change back. Her body shrank. Her hands returned. She stood human again, breathing hard, whole. Draven crossed the grass and caught her before she fell. He held her against his chest. "You held it," he said. "The whole way," she said. "It stayed." She looked up at him. He bent and kissed her, slow, and the last of the shaking left her hands. Then the wind shifted. It came from the north and carried a thread of green vapor, faint but there. Seraphina pulled back and stared north. The corruption was spreading south from the poisoned soil. It had reached the edge of this field. Soon it would reach her home. She could shift now, fully and safely. But not for long. The clean ground she needed was shrinking, and the poison was coming to find her.
