Chapter 4

By morning, word of Seraphina's growing herd had spread beyond the grove. Skilled trainers and stable hands arrived at her gates, drawn by rumor and need. She walked the line of them, asking quiet questions, watching their hands. By dusk, she had chosen the best. They set to work at once, raising a tall outdoor complex of rings, jumps, and open sky where her Pegasus could learn the shape of war. The training grounds rose fast. Hands stretched soft ropes across wide rings. Trainers led the black stallion, the white mare, the blue roan, and the dapple foal through drills under a steady sun. Wings beat the air. Hooves struck packed earth. A bright phoenix circled overhead, its fiery light marking the place like a banner for any true heart still searching. That light called more than birds. Down from the hills came dismissed soldiers, ten thousand strong, bearing patched cloaks and old swords. They gathered at the foot of an old stone castle with tall towers and faded flags. There they pitched their tents, lit their fires, and swore their loyalty to Seraphina. The castle became their root and their roof. Then, on the last clear day before the march, a new herd crested the ridge. At their lead walked a mare unlike any other, her coat washed in sunset pink and purple, sun-shaped marks scattered like coins across her flanks. She would not come easy. Seraphina sat in the grass for hours, hands open, eyes low. At last the mare stepped forward and pressed her nose to Seraphina's palm. Ten thousand Pegasus followed her in. They marched at dawn. The army moved like a tide, wings above and steel below. The one who held the crown met them on the field and fell before the day was done. Seraphina stood among the trampled banners, the sunset mare beside her, and lifted the crown in her hand. She did not yet place it on her head. The seats of power were seven, and three still belonged to a man who had been waiting for this moment longer than she knew.
