The seventh seat still sat empty, and Seraphina turned from her tower to the work she could finish today. She rode out at dawn to the wide field where her herd would live. Stablehands waited in lines, and trainers held ropes ready. She raised a great arch shaped like a golden horse shoe at the stable's mouth. Past it, a long stone manor rose with rooms for every hand and trainer she had hired. Each worker was given a bed, a post, and a name on the roll. At the far edge of the pasture, she struck the ground with her wand. A purple beam shot from a jagged peak into the sky, marking the boundary for miles. Pegasus and horses spread across the grass, and no creature crossed the light. That night a rider came from the misted hills. Lord Casven had moved his banners at last, and he carried a sealed letter with her seventeen-year-old words inside. The herd was safe. She was not.
