Seraphine Valor knelt in the dust and pressed her palm to the broken stones of an old well. The shaft beneath was deeper than it looked. Anyone passing would see junk and move on. She saw a hiding place. A sanctuary needed land, coin, and a titled name — but tonight she would settle for ground no one wanted. A tiny fairy drifted from her sleeve, wings throwing pale light on the rubble. "Map it," Seraphine whispered. The little creature dipped into the shaft and vanished. Seraphine waited, counting her own breaths. When it returned, it tugged her finger twice. Dry below. Wide enough. Safe enough. She climbed the rise behind the well and studied the squat prayer house there. Carved symbols. A small bell. Honest enough to fool a passing inspector. The cellar she had dug under it now connected, by her measurements, to the shaft below. Seraphine tied a frayed red ribbon to the iron ring beside the door. Her fingers worked the knots slowly — over, under, twice through. Only an outcast would read it. Only an outcast would come. She stepped back and looked at her work. A worthless ruin. A humble chapel. A signal. The ground was hers now, in every way that mattered. The hard part — filling it with fairies the Guild Council wanted broken — started tomorrow.
