Chapter 16

The seat was hers alone now. But Seren felt how thin her power ran. She sat a goddess with no ground to stand a goddess on. Kida had warned her before she left the tower. "A god without holy ground is a candle in wind," she'd said. "Any of the six can pinch you out." Seren rode home knowing the truth. She needed a place. Soon. She found the old cave at the wood's edge. Runes ringed its mouth, cut by hands long dead. The air inside hummed against her skin. This ground remembered worship. Seren pressed her palm to the cold stone. "Here," she said. "I claim this." The hum answered her, faint but real. Ground alone was not enough. Empty ground held no god. She needed people to name her. A woman waited at the cave mouth, gray-braided, an herb pouch tied at her waist. Lilly Greenleaf, the village herbwife. She had traded with Seren for years, back when Seren was only a witch. "I felt something pull me up the hill," Lilly said. She knelt without being told. "I don't know what you are now. But I'll tend your fire." She set down a spray of dried nightshade berries on the stone. The hum swelled. Seren felt it feed her. But one worshipper made a whisper, not a temple. Seren needed a crowd. That was where the storyteller came in. Kim Threadspinner sold tales in the marketplace, her whole dress crocheted in bright yarn. Seren had heard her spin a legend from nothing but a coin and a wink. She climbed to the cave that dusk, out of breath, curious. "They say a witch became a god," Kim said. "Is it true? A good story would fill this cave by the new moon." Seren showed her the humming stone. Kim grinned and started weaving the tale before she left the hill. By the third night, they came. Villagers left dried berries at the runed mouth. They spoke Seren's name into the dark. Each offering made the hum stronger, until it filled her chest like a second heart. Lilly lit the first altar fire. Kim's story ran through every tavern in Ironwillow. Then the ground shook. Something huge climbed from the cave's black throat. A hound, tall as a horse, black-furred, three heads snarling. Seren raised a hand. The beast stopped. It did not attack. It turned and lay across the cave mouth, three sets of eyes facing outward. "A guardian," Lilly whispered. The holy ground had answered its own claiming. It had chosen its watcher. Seren stood in the mouth of her temple, and for the first time her power did not flicker. It held. It was rooted. But roots draw notice. Far off, on high thrones, six gods felt a new place of worship burn into the world. They felt exactly where it stood. And they knew whose name the people were speaking.
