Chapter 19
The eldest god's hand still smoked from Seren's lightning. But the win had a cost. The gods now knew Mica's face. They could not sense the child the way they sensed a god, so they would hunt her the slow way, through the woods, on foot. And Seren had no shield to hide her seer from a searching eye. Mica stood by the willow wall, small hands twisting her braids. "They're coming for me now," she said. Her flat voice did not shake, but her fingers did.
Seren knew she could not out-wait six gods. She had to move Mica somewhere their gaze could not reach. She pulled a folded cloth from her mother's chest. It unrolled into a long cloak, dark, flecked with black and purple that caught the firelight. "Belladonna's weave," Seren said. "Woven shadow. It swallows a mortal's shine." She draped it over Mica's shoulders. The child seemed to blur, edges softening, as if seen through smoke.
"The cloak hides her," Seren said. "But hiding is not enough. They'll search the ground until they find her. I need holy ground closer than my cave, and I need it tonight."
Mica's eyes went blank. She saw forward. "Stone in the sky," she whispered. "Broken arches. Old banners. No god has held it in an age." Seren knew the place. An abandoned sky temple, its tiers cracked, its relics wrapped in vine. Forgotten ground belonged to no one. She could claim it.
Seren whistled once, low. A mare came down through the trees, white-coated, black mane flowing, wings folded tight. Its hooves made no sound on the ground. "She flies paths gods can't track," Seren said. "The old ways between clouds." She lifted Mica onto the mare's back and pulled the shadow cloak's hood over the small braided head. "Hold the mane. Don't look down."
The mare climbed. Seren rode her own storm-marked seat up beside them. They reached the ruined temple as the moon rose. Weathered tiers stood against the dark. Faded banners hung from broken arches. Seren dismounted on the top tier, where a cracked stone seat waited under a hole in the dome. She pressed both palms to the cold stone.
"I claim this ground," she said. "By ash and rite and throne." The runes she carried flared under her hands. Warmth spread through the old stone. The vines shivered. Far below, the three-headed hound's howl answered from her first cave, and a second bond snapped into place. Two grounds now. Two anchors. The gods would have to split their search.
Mica slid from the mare and stood inside the temple's shadow. The cloak drank the moonlight around her. "I can't feel them reaching for me," she said. "They lost the thread."
Seren breathed out. Her seer was hidden. Her power was rooted in two places, not one. But claiming forgotten ground had woken something. Deep in the temple, below the broken floor, a low sound stirred. Whatever had slept there for an age was awake now, and it was hers to answer.
