Chapter 21
Luna's light faded from the arch, but her warning stayed. Seren knelt on the temple floor and pressed her palm flat to the stone. It shook. Something below pushed up against the roots of her holy ground. Each shove cracked the tiers a little more. She had claimed this place to split the gods' hunt. Now the thing beneath it would break her second anchor before dawn.
"Don't fight it," said a small voice. A child stood in the firelight, white hair loose, a gold mark bright on their brow. Seren had never seen them, yet they walked in like they knew the place. "I watched them bury it," the child said. "A long time ago. I've worn many faces since. This one is Chris." They tipped their head at the trembling floor. "You woke a god they chained. He won't be calmed by a witch's spell."
"Then tell me what he wants," Seren said.
"An offering, given right. Not begged. Not stolen. Poured by a goddess who claims this ground." Chris looked at her mud-stained skirts. "You came dressed as a witch. He'll know the difference."
Seren went to her pack. She lifted out the crown her ancestors had kept, its bands set with pale stars, and set it on her purple hair. She drew her mother's ceremonial robes over her skirts. She took up a silver chalice, its old surface carved with worn marks. Then she cut her own palm and let her blood fill the cup. Divine blood, freely given.
The floor split. Stone fell away into dark. A hand rose first, wrapped in white cloth, then a man crowned with green leaves, his skin gold, his eyes very old. The bound first god pulled himself up through the broken tiers. Tim gripped the flame's stones. Mica shrank into shadow.
"Who wakes me," the god said. His voice bent the fire sideways.
Seren did not kneel. She held out the chalice. "I did. I claim this ground above you. I offer this freely, god to god."
He stared at the crown, at the robes, at the blood in the cup. A witch he would have crushed. A goddess he had to answer. He took the chalice and drank. The shaking stopped. The stone settled under Seren's feet and held.
"You bind me nothing," he said. "But you fed me. So I sleep, and I will remember your face." He sank back through the floor. The tiers closed over him.
Seren breathed out. Her second anchor held now, warm and whole. Chris watched the sealed stone.
"He remembers you now," the child said. "Every god below the world will. When you take your throne, one more thing will want to see it fall."
Seren touched the crown on her head. The temple was hers. But she had traded a broken anchor for an old enemy that never truly slept.
