Chapter 1

Serena Hollow had worn her mother's pendant for sixteen years, and only tonight did she find the mark hidden inside it. She sat at her table in the stone-and-timber house her mother had left her, the one wrapped in moss and silver vines. She had been polishing the silver filigree when her thumb caught a rough spot behind the crystal. She turned the teardrop over. A single symbol was scratched into the back. She had never seen it before. The pendant was all her mother had left. Her mother had walked into the forest mist one autumn morning and never returned. Serena had spent years wanting one honest thread to follow. Now she held one, and she could not read it. The mark looked like a curl of root crossed by a thin line. It meant nothing to her. Her owl shifted on its perch by the window. Its pearl-white feathers caught the candlelight, and its silver-blue eyes fixed on the pendant. The bird had belonged to her mother too. It lifted its wings and dropped to the table, hopping close to the crystal. "You've seen this," Serena whispered. "Haven't you?" The owl clicked its beak and turned toward the door. It flew to the sill, then looked back at her. It wanted her to follow. Serena had learned long ago that the bird did not waste its calls. She pulled a shawl over her shoulders and stepped outside. The path was wet stone, edged by glowing plants. The owl flew ahead, low and slow, waiting each time she fell behind. It led her past the little bridge and into the trees, where the mist thickened. A small creature waited at the roots of an old tree. Charcoal fur, a leaf-tipped tail that glowed faint green, moss-colored eyes watching her. It shrank back when she stopped. Then the owl landed beside it, and the creature relaxed. It turned and pawed at something in the dark soil. Serena knelt. A plant grew there, one she had never noticed. Dark leaves, silver veins, white blossoms that breathed a pale blue-green mist in the evening air. She reached toward a low leaf, and her breath caught. The same symbol from the pendant was carved into the plant's thick stem. Root crossed by a line. It was old, healed over with bark, cut by a hand long ago. Her mother had marked this plant. Her mother had marked the pendant to point here. Serena pressed her fingers to the carving. The mist from the blossoms curled around her wrist and did not fade. It clung. It pulled, faint but real, toward a darker stretch of the woods where the fog stood like a wall. The mark was not a word to read. It was a direction. Her mother had left a trail into the mist, and the first marker pointed deeper into Hollowdeep than Serena had ever gone.
