Chapter 1

Serenity Seed walks the edges of the Eldergreen Fenlands, searching for groves no one else remembers. She spreads glitter as she moves — rainbow dust that settles on moss and stems — but she's looking for something older than what she carries. Somewhere in these forgotten places, she believes, lies the knowledge that could teach her to forge tools that calm anxious minds. She's made one bowl already, after four tries. It works. But one success could be luck, and she won't trust luck with someone else's pain. She finds the sick grove at midday. The redwood at its center rises like a wound against the sky, its bark traced with purple burn scars that glow faintly in the shade. No glitter clings to its roots. None catches in the hanging moss. She tries spreading fresh rainbow dust across the soil, but it slides off like water on glass. The tree refuses it completely. Something here is so broken that even her glitter won't hold. Serenity circles the redwood three times before she notices the gap between two roots. The ground dips there, just slightly. She kneels and brushes away dirt with her hands. Her colors start to drain as her fingers find something solid — not stone, not wood. She pulls harder. The object comes free with a sound like tearing paper. It's a rolled parchment, old enough that the edges crumble when she touches them. She spreads it flat on the ground. A map. Symbols she doesn't recognize mark locations across the fenlands, but one drawing is clear: a building with tall shelves and a door at its heart. She looks up from the map and sees it. Behind the dying redwood, half-hidden by hanging vines, stands a structure she somehow missed before. Stone walls covered in carved patterns. Windows that catch the light like old glass. A library. The building grows from the grove itself, roots threading through its foundation. The door matches the one on the map exactly. Serenity folds the parchment carefully and tucks it against her chest. Her colors flicker — dark, then bright, then dark again. This place has been here the whole time, holding answers she couldn't see until the ground gave them up. She stands and walks toward the door.
