Chapter 1
Serra Crystalstine pressed one hand to the clock in her chest and felt it stutter. The ticking came slower now, each beat spaced wider than the last. She had built that clock herself, counted every match she lost on it, and its gears gave her the heat she needed to forge crystal. Tonight she needed that heat for one blade. A wing-blade sharp enough to shatter the warlord who was draining time from every realm. But the warlord had found her first. His pull reached across the castle halls and tugged at her clock, slowing it toward stillness.
She knelt beside her half-built forge inside the crystal castle. A molten shard of her own wing glowed on the anvil. If her clock stopped, the shard would cool and crack, and she would have nothing. Her purple skin already showed thin fractures across her shoulders. She spread her wings to steady herself. The ticking dropped another beat.
Boots scraped stone behind her. Chronus Gearlock walked in, the brass clock in his chest spinning fast, his crystal arms flickering blue and pink. He was an elf wizard who wrestled, who could nudge time a few seconds back or forward. He logged every match he lost in a little book. He had lost seven since the timeline started breaking. He did not greet her.
"Your clock's dying," he said. "He's pulling the hands."
"I know." Serra's voice shook. "If it stops, I can't finish the blade."
He crouched, studied her chest, said nothing soft. "I can hold it. Three seconds. No more."
"Three seconds to forge a weapon?"
"Three seconds, over and over." He pressed two fingers to her clock face. His gears flashed. "Each time it stalls, I shove it back. You strike when I say. Miss the window, I can't stop the next."
Serra gripped her hammer. The molten shard flared, then dimmed as the warlord's pull bit deeper. Her clock groaned toward silence.
"Now," Chronus said.
His arm locked. Her clock jerked backward and ticked once. Serra swung. The hammer rang on crystal. Sparks sprayed the dark floor.
"Now."
Another tick. Another strike. The shard took an edge, long and curved like a feather. The warlord pulled harder. A crack split across Serra's forearm. She did not stop.
"Last one," Chronus said. His crystals dimmed. "I'm out after this."
The clock stilled completely. For one breath Serra felt nothing in her chest. Then Chronus forced it back a final second. The gears caught. She brought the hammer down with everything she had.
The blade finished with a high, singing ring. It lay on the anvil, bright and sharp, humming like a shard that held a song. The warlord's pull snapped loose and vanished.
Serra sat back, gasping. Her clock ticked again, steady now, reading 47.
"He felt that," Chronus said, shaking his stiff arm. "He knows the blade exists. He'll come for you himself."
