Chapter 6

John sat before the tree and let his breath slow. The spirit butterfly settled on a low branch, its gold wings folding over a field of stars and small moons. John's mind sank past his thoughts. The ground fell away. He drifted into a warm dark, deeper than sleep, and waited for the earth to speak. Light came first. Three figures took shape, tall and calm, their edges soft as candle flame. They were teachers from beyond the world. They spoke of order. "Build your days on light," they said. "Keep a routine. Rise, breathe, serve, rest. Structure holds the seeker steady." John listened. He felt the sense in their words. A life without shape drifts, he knew. He had drifted for years. Then another voice rose. It came from inside his own chest, low and sure. "You are special," it said. "You were chosen. Accept it fully. Stand above the rest." The words felt sweet. His heart lifted toward them. The three teachers turned their faces. "No," they said together. "That is ego. Ego builds walls. Set it down." John reached to push the voice away, as they asked. But it clung to him. It was warm and familiar. It had carried him out of his village. It had made him rise each morning to teach. He stopped pushing. He held still and looked at both. The light of the teachers. The dark pull of the ego voice. He saw a truth the teachers had not shown him. "I cannot cut one away," he said aloud. "The ego woke me. It made me walk. It taught me I had something to give." His voice steadied. "Structure needs a self to hold it. The self needs pride to begin. Both are mine." A warmth moved through his body then. It ran from his crown to his feet, slow and searching, like water finding every room. He understood. The medicine was looking for what he needed to release. He opened himself to it. He let it reach the ego, the pride, the ache of being chosen. He waited for it to pull something out. Nothing left him. The warmth passed through and found nothing to take. Every part remained. The light stayed. The darkness stayed. Both belonged. The spirit butterfly lifted from the branch and drifted close. Its gold wings brushed the air near his face. John opened his eyes. His cheeks were wet. He pressed his palm to the tree bark and breathed. He had come to be cleansed. He had thought healing meant cutting the dark away. Now he knew better. He was not here to become only light. He was here to hold the whole of himself and stay standing. The path forward was not to shed his ego. It was to carry it wisely. John rose from the ground. His legs shook. He looked at the grandmother face in the tree and nodded once. He was ready for whatever the earth asked next.
