Chapter 4

Shun stepped through the neon-lit door of the base, the small chip warm on his wrist. It pulsed slow and steady, like a tiny heart riding along. He moved past the rocks and into the bright hum inside, where the screens were already waking up for him. He sat at the long desk lined with six glowing monitors. The scroll-shaped drive his mother had left him slid into the port. Gold lines of code unrolled across the screens. He read them once. He read them twice. His metal hand went still on the keyboard. The data showed a rooftop site across the city. A quiet place his crew used for drops. His mother had known about it for months. She had watched it. She had done nothing. The reveal sat in his chest like a stone that did not drop. It changed nothing. The crew was still his. The site was still safe. She had seen them the whole time and let them run, the way you let a bright kite ride the wind because cutting the string would be worse. The knowing did not move a single piece on the board. Shun leaned back. The chip on his wrist blinked up at him, patient. He tapped its edge with one finger, soft, the way you greet a small animal that has chosen you. "Alright," he said. "You ride with me now. You eat what she sends. You stay close." He pulled the drive from the port and set it aside. The screens dimmed. The chip pulsed once, bright, and settled. His mother's last gift had told him nothing new. But the living thing on his arm was his now, named by the choice to keep it. The next move was already forming, and it belonged to him.
