Chapter 1

Sierra wanted to be the first person to map a walking path through these old woods, and by nightfall she wanted a cabin site to call her own. She had left the city with a pack, a tent, and a waterproof sketchbook full of half-drawn trails. For six days she had crossed ridges no marked map showed. Today the creek stopped her cold. The water she remembered from yesterday had been a calm, ankle-deep ribbon. Rain in the hills had swollen it overnight. Now it ran brown and fast, tearing at the banks. She stepped in to her knees to test it. The current shoved her sideways and nearly took her boot. She grabbed a root and hauled herself back. She opened the sketchbook under her jacket and studied her notes. Her planned route ran straight across here. There was no bridge on any map. She would lose the whole day going back. Sierra followed the bank downstream instead. Wet ferns soaked her legs. The creek curved around a rise, and there she stopped. A huge old tree leaned over the water, its trunk wrapped in thick moss, its branches sweeping low. Beneath it hung something no map had promised her. An old swinging bridge crossed the creek. Weathered planks sagged between two thick posts. Hand-knotted ropes ran along both sides. Someone had built it here long ago, then let the woods swallow it. Her heart jumped. This was proof that people had walked this ground before her. She tested the first plank with her weight. It held. The bridge swayed as she stepped out, but the ropes were still strong under her grip. Halfway across, a board cracked and dropped into the current below. She froze, breathed, then shifted to the rope and kept moving. She reached the far bank and dropped to her knees, laughing. The crossing changed everything. Her route was open again, and better than open. A forgotten bridge meant a story worth mapping. She pulled out the sketchbook to draw it before the light failed. That was when she saw the object at her knee. Half-buried in the mud sat a stone arrowhead. Its edges were chipped clean and sharp, shaped by a careful hand. She lifted it and turned it over. Rain had washed it from the bank. It was old, far older than the bridge. Sierra sat back on her heels and looked at the far trees. Someone had built that bridge. But someone else had lived here long before, long enough to leave stone tools in the ground. Her simple route now cut through the home of a vanished people. She wiped the arrowhead clean and tucked it into her pack. The creek roared behind her, uncrossable again if she turned back. Ahead lay ground no living person had claimed. She had wanted a place to start over. Instead she had walked into someone else's forgotten one.
