Chapter 1

Silvareth Moonwhisper kept a dying flower in a glass of river water, and he had sworn to bring it home. The lily came from his bloodline's grove, the one his family lost three generations ago. Elders sealed the path when they exiled his people. Now only this one blossom remained, carried out by his grandmother, passed down to him. Its petals had curled brown at the edges. Silvareth knew that when the last petal fell, his last link to the grove would fall with it. He stood on the porch of his riverside manor and studied the flower in the morning light. The wooden rails curved around him. The river slid past below. He had searched old maps for years. No map showed the hidden path. The grove was warded, folded away, reachable only by those who knew the way in. His grandmother had died before she could teach him. A splash broke his thinking. Below the porch, a silver wolf stepped from the shallows. Water dripped from its grey-edged fur. Its blue eyes fixed on him, calm and certain. Silvareth had never owned a dog or tamed a wolf. Yet this one watched him as if it had come on purpose. The wolf climbed the stone steps. It pushed its nose toward the glass and sniffed the dying lily. Then it turned and trotted back toward the river, stopped, and looked over its shoulder. Silvareth understood. The grove had grown this flower. The wolf knew its scent. It could follow that scent to the source. He did not hesitate. He lifted the glass carefully and stepped down from the porch. "Show me," he said. The wolf led him along the riverbank for hours. It never let him fall behind. When he slowed, it waited. When he lost the trail, it circled back and nudged his knee. The river narrowed. The trees grew thick and old. The air changed, turning cool and still. Then the wolf stopped at a wall of tangled roots and stone. Silvareth saw no opening. He raised the dying lily toward the roots. The last brown petal trembled. The wall shifted. Roots pulled aside like a curtain. A narrow path opened into shadow, lined with pale moss that glowed faint green. The hidden path. The way to his bloodline's grove. Silvareth's hand shook. He had the path now. He could set foot where his family had been forbidden. The wolf stepped into the opening and waited. Silvareth followed. Beyond the roots, the grove spread before him, but it was not the place from the old stories. The great trees stood bare and grey. The ground lay cracked and dry. No flower bloomed anywhere. Silvareth looked down at the single curling lily in his glass, the only living thing he had brought, and understood the size of what he now faced.
