Chapter 1
Silver Powerforce walked the palace halls before dawn and counted the guards who would not meet her eyes. Three out of nine. A week ago it had been one. Her aunt Cyndi had thrown open her challenge for the throne, and now every servant, every cousin, every cook in the kitchen was being tested in whispers. Silver's mother had ruled this realm for seven hundred years so people could trust that someone was looking out for them. Silver meant to keep that promise standing. But she could not lead a house she could not read.
She carried a small crystal lantern on a chain at her belt. She had cut it from a broken streetlight in the lower court and set it to a simple charm: it warmed when she stood near someone she still believed in, and cooled when she did not. It was not proof. Her magic could not force anyone to care about the realm, and it could not force honesty either. But the lantern gave her a private mark, and a private mark was more than she had yesterday. She pressed it against her palm when the head steward bowed to her. The crystal stayed cold. She smiled at him anyway and walked on.
Outside, on the faceted bench in the south garden, her youngest brother sat with his knees drawn up. He watched the paths the way other children watched birds. He told her, without looking up, that Goldie had crossed the courtyard four times since moonset and had spoken to no one. He told her Goldie was waiting. Silver trusted him more than she trusted her own eyes. She thanked him and went to find her cousin.
Goldie stood by the water clock with her arms folded. Silver asked her plainly what she wanted. Goldie did not soften it. "Time keeper. Not ruler. I don't want the realm. I want the hours." Silver held the lantern against her sleeve. It warmed. She did not trust the warmth yet, but she trusted that Goldie had said the true thing out loud, in daylight, without a price attached. Silver told her she would carry the offer to Bella. Goldie nodded once and said nothing more. Her sister, watching from a doorway, scowled and turned away, already ready to argue the choice later.
Silver found her mother alone at the long window. She told Bella everything: the cold guards, the warm crystal, Goldie's flat request, Cyndi's whispers threading the halls. Bella listened without moving. When Silver finished, Bella said, "Split the seat. Measure Goldie for the hours. Keep the realm for yourself." She did not explain. Silver felt the weight of it settle. The loyalty test in the halls did not end, but she had a name she could trust, a brother at her back, and a decision from her mother. She left the window knowing what to do next, and knowing Cyndi would answer.
