Chapter 1

Silviana Moonwhisper wanted to marry a man who would burn her for what she was. She stood at the edge of Moonwood, where the silver trees stopped and the mortal road began. She had never crossed that line. Beyond it lay the prince's kingdom, where farmers hung iron on their doors and told children that elves stole breath in the night. She loved the prince anyway. She had seen him once, at the border, laughing with his guards. Her crown was heavy on her silver hair. She took it off and held it in both hands. The problem was simple and cruel. She could not walk into his court. Her ears, her eyes, her light gave her away in a heartbeat. No mortal would ride her to the gates. No noble would name her a lady. She had power enough to raze the road, but no way to arrive as anything but a threat. So she went to the one mortal who owed Moonwood a debt. Lady Beatrice Ashworth waited in a cold stone parlor, a widow with silver hair piled high and a wine-dark gown stiff with gold thread. Years ago, Silviana's healers had saved the old countess from a fever. The dowager had promised repayment. Now Silviana meant to collect. "You've come to ruin me," Beatrice said. She did not rise. She turned a pearl ring on her finger and studied Silviana like a merchant checking coins. "They'd take my head for hiding your kind." "Then hide me well," Silviana said. Beatrice laughed, sharp and tired. "Bold. Good. Court eats the meek." She stood at last and crossed to a locked chest. From it she lifted a veil, pale and shimmering, its patterns catching light that wasn't there. "This will smooth your face into a mortal's. Wear it and you're my late husband's niece, come from the south. I'll swear to it." She pressed the cloth into Silviana's hands. "But you can't arrive on foot like a beggar. A southern lady needs a mount." Silviana raised one hand and whistled a note no human throat could make. Beyond the window, shadow gathered on the road. A steed formed from it, black as a starless sky, draped in folds like torn cloak. Its eyes glowed cold blue. It made no sound as it walked. Beatrice went pale. "That thing will draw every eye in the kingdom." "No," Silviana said. "It runs faster than rumor. We'll reach the gates before anyone thinks to look." She drew the veil over her face. Her ears blurred. Her glow dimmed. In the parlor's dark glass she saw a mortal woman, plain and unremarkable, and her chest tightened at how little of herself remained. At dusk they rode. The spectral steed carried them past the iron doors and the frightened farms, silent as fog. By the third night, torches marked the prince's court ahead. Silviana had reached him. Now she had to fool everyone in it.
