Chapter 1

Sir Aldric Ironheart wanted the throne, and he had no army to take it. He stood alone before the ruined watchtower, his great armor scarred, his sword heavy at his hip. Men called him the Iron Wall, the knight who never flinched. They did not know his hands shook when he counted his soldiers. He had none. A lone knight who dreams of a crown is a fool waiting for the axe. Aldric knew this. He dreamed anyway. He had come to the tower to think, not to fight. But smoke curled from the far ridge. Bandits had raided a village at the forest's edge. Aldric heard screaming carried on the wind. He gripped his sword and told himself to walk away. A king needs men, not more scars. Yet his feet turned toward the smoke. When he reached the village, a young woman already stood in the road. She held a broken spear and faced six raiders alone. She wore mismatched armor, a white tunic marked with a red cross, and she smiled like she was born for this. "Behind me, farmers!" she shouted. "A knight protects the weak!" She was losing. A raider knocked the spear from her hands. Aldric charged. His armor made him a wall of iron, and he swept two men down with one blow. The others ran. The young woman scrambled up, breathless, staring at him like he was carved from legend. "You're a real knight," she said. "I'm Elara Brightblade. I want to be one too. Teach me. I'll follow you anywhere." Aldric almost laughed. He tried to sound cold. "Following me leads to the grave, girl." "Then I'll dig it myself," she said. She did not blink. Something in her stubbornness cracked his armor open. He had spent months hiding his soft heart behind hard words. Here was a person who saw the knight and wanted to become it. And behind her, the villagers watched. They had seen him scatter the raiders. An old man knelt. A boy touched Aldric's cape like it was holy. Aldric understood then. He would never buy an army with gold he did not have. But loyalty was different. Loyalty grew from people you saved. It started with one. "Stand up," he told Elara. "If you follow me, you obey me. And we start today." Elara grinned and grabbed the fallen spear. The villagers rose around them, murmuring, offering bread, offering hands. Aldric no longer stood alone before an empty tower. He had his first sword sworn to him. One knight was not an army. But one had become two, and two could become a hundred. The path to the throne no longer ended at the axe. It began here, in a burned village, with a girl who believed in him.
