Chapter 1

Solara Moonwhisper pressed her palm to the cracked ground and listened for the dead city. For three nights the whispers had come to her, faint and broken, calling from somewhere under the wasteland. A buried city slept down there. Its ruins begged her to wake them. But the voices came scrambled, like many people talking at once, and she could not tell where to dig. She knelt in the dust outside her home. The house rose behind her in smooth glowing curves, its windows warm against the dark. Inside, she was safe. Out here, she was useless. The city needed her, and she could not find it. "Come on," she whispered. "Show me." The whispers swelled, then folded into noise. She winced and pulled her hand back. Her power was strong. Her aim was not. She had spent her whole life feeling buried things stir beneath her fingers. She had never learned to point at one. Solara looked at the field beside her house. Sunflowers grew there in long rows, their golden faces glowing faintly in the dark. She had planted them as a child. They always turned toward heat and light, even at night, even underground where the roots reached. An idea took hold. The flowers followed hidden warmth. The city's heart might give off such warmth. She could not hear where the ruins lay. Maybe the sunflowers could. She walked into the rows and pressed both hands into the soil. She poured her power down through the roots, past the flowers, into the ground itself. "Find it," she said. "Find the warm place." The field shivered. One by one, the glowing heads began to turn. Not toward the sky. They bent low, tilting their faces at the earth, all leaning the same way. A hundred golden flowers pointed like fingers across the wasteland toward a low ridge in the distance. The scrambled whispers snapped into one clear voice. It came from beneath that ridge. Solara heard a single word, over and over, rising through the dirt. Home. Home. Home. Her chest tightened. She had it. After nights of noise, she knew exactly where the city slept. She ran to the ridge. The whispers grew louder with every step, no longer broken, no longer faint. At the base of the ridge, the soil pulsed under her boots like a heartbeat. She dropped to her knees and dug with her bare hands. Her fingers struck stone. Not a rock. A carved surface, smooth and cold, sealed with strange marks. A door. Beneath it, the voices changed. The gentle calling stopped. Something older woke and pressed against the stone from the other side. It did not whisper. It pushed. The door shuddered under her hands, and dust rained from the cracks. Solara had found the buried city. Now something inside it was trying to get out.
