Chapter 4

Spooky Ghost drifted back to the burned cottage before dawn. The cold still sat in his chest. He had scared the traveler, but that was luck. One man on a lonely road. Halloween was almost here, and he had no one to practice on. No one came near the cottage. The charred walls and broken door kept the whole town away. He needed a victim, and the one safe place he had was too empty to use. Echo and Whisper slipped through the soot-blackened beams. The twin ghosts had trained him at the gas station. They finished each other's words like always. "You're stuck," said Echo. "You need someone brave enough to come here," said Whisper. Spooky Ghost sank onto a crooked stair. "No one is that brave," he said. "They'd rather stay away than find out what's inside." Whisper floated to a gap in the floor. She pulled out a rolled sheet of old paper. It was a treasure map, stained and creased, with a bold X marked in the middle. "Greed is braver than any kid," said Echo. "Leave this where someone finds it," said Whisper. "The X leads here." Spooky Ghost took the map. He saw at once how it worked. A false promise could pull someone past their fear. He carried the map to the edge of town at dusk. He left it on a bench by the fuel stop, half unrolled, the X showing. Then he hurried back to the cottage to wait. The cold crept into him as he settled behind the broken door. He thought of the hunters. He thought of Halloween. He let the warmth drain out and held still. Footsteps crunched on the path near midnight. A young man pushed the crooked gate open, the map clutched in his fist. He stepped over the threshold, boots loud on the burned boards. "Treasure's got to be here somewhere," he muttered. He swung a flashlight across the walls. Spooky Ghost rose slow from the dark corner. He did not moan. He went gray and flat and empty. The air turned thick and still. The young man's light found the shape in the corner. He froze. The flashlight shook in his hand. Spooky Ghost held the cold one long breath, letting the silence press down. The man's mouth opened but no sound came. He dropped the map. He dropped the light. Then he ran, crashing through the gate and into the night, screaming all the way down the road. Spooky Ghost drifted over the fallen map. He had done it again, this time on purpose. The cottage was no longer a cage. He could lure anyone here now. But the screaming had carried far across the quiet town. Lights flicked on in windows down the slope. Somewhere, people were already asking what made that sound. His safe place had just told the whole town exactly where to look.
