Chapter 1

Spore Willowveil stopped at the edge of a bare patch and felt the ground go quiet under his bare feet. The wrongness hit his chest first. His wings, two mushroom caps grown from his shoulders, folded tight without him asking. He was six years into looking for the woman who had left him among the mushrooms and roots, and he still could not read a quiet patch before it was almost too late. The hum had been steady all morning. He had followed it east through wet ferns, humming back under his breath the way he always did alone. Then this circle of moss, ten steps across, and nothing. No pulse. No pull. Just silence pressing on his ribs. He did not know if quiet meant a sinkhole, a snare, or something worse. Last time he had guessed, he ran the wrong way and got lost for two nights. He crouched at the edge and set one finger on the moss. Nothing answered. "Step back." The voice came from above his ear. He looked up. A fairy hovered there, no taller than his hand, a crown of leaves and small flowers on her dark hair. Her wings blurred to keep her steady. She was the forest's watcher — he had heard old people at trade posts mention her without using her name, the way they mentioned weather they respected. He stepped back. "Something walked through here," Sylvara Thornwhisper said. "Three days ago. It ate the sound out of the ground." "I can't tell what quiet means," Spore said. He had not meant to say it. He had not said it to anyone. She looked at him. Not at his mushroom cap, not at his leaf shirt. At his face. "You hum back," she said. Not a question. His throat closed. He nodded once. "Then listen." She flew low over the dead patch. "Quiet like this is a footprint. Whatever stepped here pulled the life up with it. If you walk in, it pulls you too. If the quiet is thin and moving, that is only sleeping ground. You test with a stone." She landed on a root and pointed. He picked up a pebble and tossed it onto the moss. It struck and made no sound at all — not even the small tick of stone on soil. "Footprint," she said. "Go around. Always around, until you learn the thin kind." He circled the patch wide. On the far side the hum came back into his soles, faint but there. He almost cried from the relief of it. Sylvara kept pace at his shoulder. "You are looking for someone." "My mother." "Then we walk the same way for now. I am tracking what made that print." She glanced at him. "You will hear it before I do. Tell me when you do." Spore nodded. The ground hummed. He hummed back, out loud this time, and kept walking.
