Chapter 1

Spring had wanted to reach the ocean for as long as she could remember, but she had never once flown past the edge of her home meadow. She was a light purple butterfly, and every night she dreamed of salt air and endless water. Every morning she woke to the same flowers, the same fence, the same mother who needed her. Today she perched on the tallest lilac by the porch and stared at the sky. It stretched wide in all directions. She had no idea which way the ocean even lay. Her mother landed beside her on the rail. She was old, her pale wings frayed and streaked with gray. She moved slowly, testing each step with her thin legs. "You're looking at the horizon again," her mother said. It was not a question. "I don't even know which way to go," Spring said. "East? West? I've never left the meadow. I could fly for days and find nothing." Her mother was quiet. Then she pointed one leg toward the far side of the garden, past the tall purple mansion that overlooked the meadow. "The gulls," she said. "Every evening the white birds fly that way. They sleep near water. Follow them, and you'll find your ocean." Spring stared at her. "You knew. All this time you knew the way." "I hoped you'd stop asking," her mother said. Her voice cracked. "I'm old, Spring. Your brother won't care for me. He never has." Spring's wings went still. Her twin brother lived at the far edge of the meadow, dressed always in black, quick with a cruel word. He had chased Spring from every flower she loved. He would not lift a leg to help their mother. "Then come with me," Spring said. "I can't fly that far anymore. You know that." Her mother folded her worn wings. "But you can. I won't hold you here another season." Spring watched the sky turn gold. Sure enough, a line of white birds rose over the mansion's dome and cut a clean path toward the west. Now she knew the way. The last thing keeping her still was gone. She pressed close to her mother's frail side. "I'll go at first light." "Good," her mother whispered. But her legs trembled on the rail, and she did not look at the birds. Spring lay awake that night with her goal finally clear. West, toward the gulls, toward the ocean. She had wanted this her whole life. She had the direction now. She also had a mother who could barely climb a flower stem, and a brother who would let her starve. Finding the way had solved one problem and uncovered a worse one. If Spring flew west at dawn, she would leave the person she loved most in the care of no one at all.
