Chapter 1

Star Bright wanted one thing: to find a constellation no one had named, and give it her own name, so the sky would carry her forever. But she had never once seen the whole night sky. Tall trees ringed her cottage on every side. Their branches locked overhead like a lid. Each night she climbed to her window and found only scraps of sky, a star here, half a star there, never enough to draw a shape. Tonight she pressed her forehead to the cold glass and counted. Four stars. She needed hundreds. In her black sleeve she carried a folded chart, blank except for the lines she wished she could fill. Three years of blank paper. She was blessed with a warm bed and a full plate, but none of it gave her the sky. A sound broke her counting. Something moved below, pale against the dark trees. She opened the door and stepped onto the wet grass. A white wolf stood at the edge of the yard. Its fur glowed faintly. Its eyes were purple, steady, fixed on her. Star Bright should have been afraid. She was not. The wolf turned and walked a few steps, then stopped and looked back. It wanted her to follow. She pulled her coat tight and went. The wolf led her between the trees, along a narrow path she had never noticed. Roots caught her feet. Branches raked her hair. She kept her eyes on the pale shape ahead. It never hurried and never let her fall too far behind. The trees thinned. The wolf stopped. Star Bright stepped past it into a clearing. Flowers covered the ground, lilies with petals that shimmered like scattered starlight. They gave off a soft glow, enough to see by. But the flowers were not the gift. She looked up. The clearing had no trees above it. The whole sky opened over her head, edge to edge, more stars than she had names for. They spilled across the black in rivers and clusters and lonely points of light. Her breath caught. Her hand went to the chart in her sleeve. Here she could map. Here she could finally begin. She knelt in the glowing lilies and unfolded the paper against her knee. Her pencil trembled. She marked one star, then another, then a third, matching each point above to a mark below. The wolf lay down beside her and watched. For the first time in three years, the page was no longer blank. She worked until her fingers ached. When she finally looked at what she had drawn, she saw the problem. She had marked forty stars in one small corner. The sky held thousands. From one night, one clearing, she could never chart them all. She needed to know which stars were truly new, unnamed, unclaimed. And she had no way to tell. The wolf rose and looked at her, as if it already knew.
