Chapter 1

Star wanted answers about the sky-god, but their own body kept starting fights. Star was a bird, long-tailed and bright as spilled paint, and Star could talk. Every bird of their kind could, and old stories said one feather from a sky-god had first given them speech. Star had crossed the whole island to learn which god, and where. But Star also carried a curse: their feathers pulled metal like a magnet. The market crowd should have helped. Instead a copper charm ripped off a merchant's belt and slapped against Star's wing. A silver bell followed. Then a fairy's ring, tugging her finger sideways until she yelped. "Thief!" the merchant shouted. Metal trinkets clung to Star's chest like burrs. Nobody would talk. They only glared and grabbed their pockets. "I'm not stealing!" Star said. "I can't stop it!" A brass buckle leapt from a stall and stuck to their tail. The crowd pressed closer, angry now. A quiet voice cut through. "You're broadcasting. That's your problem." The speaker stepped from a stall's shadow. She was small and hooded, her dark cloak stitched with pale stars, and the shade around her seemed to bend toward her hands. A shadow weaver. Star had heard of her kind. She wove darkness like cloth, and her own gift had once run wild too. She watched Star with calm, tired eyes, like someone who knew exactly how this felt. "Night bloom," she said. "I hide things for a living. Come. Before they tie your wings." Star hesitated. The buckle on their tail yanked again. A dagger twitched in its sheath nearby. Star chose. "Help me." Night bloom pulled a shadow across the aisle, thick as a curtain, and dragged Star behind it. The angry faces vanished. "You can't switch it off," she said. "But you can catch what you pull. Give the metal somewhere to go before it hits you." "With what?" She whistled, low and sharp. Wings answered. A flock of black-and-white magpies swept down, soft-feathered and quick-eyed, each snatching a trinket in mid-air. They lifted the copper charm, the bell, the buckle, and darted off to drop each one back at its owner. The pulling never stopped. But now the flock caught it first. "They're trained," Night bloom said. "They follow the pull. They follow you now, if you feed them." Star tested it. A nail sprang loose from a crate. A magpie caught it before it reached Star's feathers. No charm touched skin. The shouting behind the shadow faded to grumbling. "It works," Star breathed. "They can't blame me if nothing sticks." "For small things," Night bloom warned. "Your pull is growing. The magpies won't be enough near real iron." She studied Star. "You came here asking about a sky-god. I know who does. But she guards a hall of iron relics." Star's stomach dropped. The one place holding answers was the one place their curse would tear apart.
