Chapter 1

Stephanie Williams wanted a hunting ground of her own, and tonight she meant to take one. Her sire ruled all this land. He let her roam it, but only if her work paid him back. She had no district she could call hers. That was the problem. Any kill she made in open territory belonged to whichever older vampire smelled it first. A young one like her could feed, then watch a bigger predator claim the blood and the ground beneath it. She needed a place no one else held. She had found one at last: a stretch of wet lowland where glowing willows dripped green sap and no elder had planted a flag. The trouble was proof. A district was not yours because you walked it. It was yours because everyone knew a killing there answered to you. So she came to the stone waystation at the edge of the willows, where the horses were stabled and travelers passed through. If she meant a message, she needed a witness who would carry it. That witness was Vera Bole. Stephanie found her forking hay in the dark, boots caked to the ankle, humming to horses that would not eat. Every animal in the row stood dead still when Vera moved among them. Stephanie had met her twice before and disliked how the girl's smile always came, then arrived again a half-second late, like a copy of a smile. "You're back," Vera said, and laughed. The laugh landed too slow. "The horses hate this ground. Ever notice?" "I noticed you," Stephanie said. She had planned to kill someone here. A body in the willows would tell every elder the land was claimed and defended. Vera fit the plan. A stablehand near an inn, missed by few. Easy to leave where it counted. But the horses' silence pulled at her gut, the same pull she felt over a kill that was not human. Stephanie stepped closer and looked hard at the girl. The eyes did not track right. The breath made no fog in the cold. "You're not one of them," Stephanie said. "You're not a traveler." Vera's smile stopped mid-shape. "No," she said. "I watch. Same as the owl watched. He likes to know his land." Stephanie did not need the name. She knew her sire kept eyes he never mentioned. Killing this one would not claim the district. It would tell him she'd struck down his own watcher inside his own domain. So she chose the harder proof. She dragged the willow ground itself into her claim. She marked the lowland at its four wet corners, tore her palm, and pressed blood to bark until the glowing sap ran red. Any elder who crossed it now would smell her scent laid down first. "Tell him," Stephanie said. "Tell him the willows are mine. And tell him I left his spy breathing." Vera's slow smile returned. "He'll want to know why you knew," she said.
