Stephen's Arc

Stephen sits at a table in the back corner of a coffee shop, watching people pass by the window. He's been here three hours, waiting for someone who will sit still long enough to listen. A man slides into the seat across from him without asking. The stranger's eyes are steady and calm. The man sets something on the table between them. It's a ring, thick and heavy, covered in tiny engraved patterns. Stephen can feel it humming even before the stranger speaks. "You've been planting seeds since you were eight," the man says. His voice is quiet but certain. "Talking to anyone who'll listen. Waiting for roots that won't show for years." Stephen's hand goes still on his coffee cup. Nobody knows this. Nobody has ever put it into words like that. The stranger turns the ring slowly with one finger. "I left this here two days ago," he says. "Before you ever walked in. I knew you'd come. I knew you'd choose this table." Stephen stares at the ring. The vibration feels like recognition. The man leans back in his chair. "You think you're alone in this," he says. "You're not."
