Chapter 1
Stephen Salvatore had gone thirty hours without blood, and his hands had started to shake. He gripped the edge of the sink in a gas station bathroom, staring at the tile, counting his breaths. Centuries of practice had taught him the signs. First the shaking. Then the thirst behind his eyes, sharp as glass. He had built a feeding schedule to stop this. Forty years of work, one strict rule: never wait too long. But he wanted more than a schedule. He wanted out. He wanted to live without needing blood at all, to feel human again.
He had skipped his last feeding on purpose. A woman in the next town sold animal blood from a butcher shop. Stephen believed it might hold the thirst back. If it worked, he would never have to hunt a person again.
He drove there before dawn. The cooler bag sat on the passenger seat, cold against his arm. Back in the motel, he tore open the first pouch and drank. The pig's blood was thin and wrong, but he forced down all six. He waited. For an hour, the shaking eased. He almost laughed. Then the thirst returned, worse than before. His gums ached. The animal blood had woken the craving, not fed it.
A knock hit the door. Stephen smelled the person on the other side before he heard the voice. A young hotel clerk, holding fresh towels. Blood moved under her skin like a drumbeat. Stephen's control cracked. He stepped back and gripped the doorframe.
"Leave them," he said. His voice came out low and strange.
The door opened anyway.
But it wasn't the clerk. It was Damon. His brother filled the doorway, black hair wet from rain, blue eyes bright with something between worry and delight. He held the clerk's arm and steered her gently down the hall. Then he turned back to Stephen and smiled.
"You almost ate the help," Damon said. He stepped inside and kicked the empty pouches. "Pig blood, Steph? A hundred and fifty years and you're still trying to fix yourself."
Stephen's throat burned. He hated that he was glad to see him. Damon had followed him from city to city, decade to decade, always circling, never leaving. Save him or ruin him. Even Damon didn't seem to know which.
"It slowed it down," Stephen said.
"It made it worse." Damon's smile faded. He pulled a flask from his jacket and set it on the bed. "Drink. Real blood. Or lose control and do something you can't take back. Your choice."
Stephen looked at the flask. He thought of the clerk's pulse. His hands were shaking too hard now to trust.
He drank. The thirst quieted at once, clean and complete.
The animal blood had failed. His way out was gone. And his brother had just proven he still held the only leash that worked.
