Chapter 3
Damon's flask kept Stephen weak. That was the point. Each drink was measured, timed, never enough to make him strong. Stephen understood the trap now. He needed the schedule to stay in control, but the schedule left him too tired to hunt for the cure. Every hour he spent asking careful questions, his hunger climbed. When it climbed too high, bad things happened, and Damon arrived to fix them. Stephen decided to test one hard truth. He would skip a feeding on purpose and see if he could still think, still search, before the thirst took him.
He told Damon he wanted to walk alone. Damon watched him from the car. "One hour," his brother said. He tapped his own watch. "Then I come find you. I always do." Stephen nodded and walked until the car was gone from sight.
He went to the old graveyard at the edge of town. Aged headstones leaned in the grass. A crow stood among them, still. People here talked to the dead. Stephen thought someone might talk to him about older things, cures and cures that failed. His skin already itched. The missed feeding pulled at his gut like a hook.
A girl knelt at two matching graves. Long brown hair. She set flowers between the stones, then looked up. Her eyes were dark and calm. "My parents," she said, before he could ask. "I come most days." She did not seem afraid of him. That was rare.
Her name was Elena. Stephen sat on a low stone and made himself breathe slow. He asked whether her family knew the town's old stories. Cures, sicknesses, things people whispered. She tilted her head. "You mean the sick who got better when doctors couldn't help them." She named an old journal her family kept. "My ancestor wrote it all down."
Stephen leaned forward. This was the lead he needed. Then the thirst surged. Her pulse was loud in his ears. His hands shook against the stone. He gripped the granite until it cracked.
"Are you okay?" Elena reached for his arm.
He pulled back. "Don't." He stood too fast. His control was going, and he knew it. He had proven his point and lost it in the same minute. He could search, but only until the hunger broke him, and it broke him fast.
A hand closed on his shoulder. Damon. "Time's up," he said, smiling at Elena. He pressed the flask into Stephen's hand. Stephen drank. The thirst eased. The shaking stopped.
Elena stood, brushing dirt from her knees. "There's a journal," she said to Stephen. "If you really want to see it."
Damon's eyes moved between them, sharp now, curious.
Stephen had his answer. He could not search on an empty tank. But he had found something the flask could not give him. Not a stronger body. A person who held the pages he needed, and a reason to come back.
