Chapter 1

Stevie Sanity had thirty minutes to file the second claim, and the poster in his coat pocket had stopped making sense. He stood at the edge of the ritual circle where the two courts met the ground. On one side, the stone locked into a clean ring of runes. On the other, the stone cracked open around a live vein of fire. He had won the first claim here a year ago by accident, using chaos magic as a legal instrument inside the Court of Order. Both courts had to accept it because it broke both their rules at once. The second claim was supposed to widen that crack until he sat above both benches. That was the arc of it. Sovereignty over Order. Sovereignty over Chaos. One man in the seam. He pulled the poster out and flattened it against his knee. A grinning skull, rainbow brain, a hoodie that read my real name is Change. He had drawn on it the night he found the loophole, when the internal logic of chaos magic had opened in his head like a warm room. He used to be able to look at the skull and hear the rule underneath. Today he looked at it and heard nothing. He had given up certainty as the price of standing between the courts. He rarely said so out loud. He said it now, to the stone. "I can't hear it anymore." The clerks arrived on the order side in a straight line. The chaos side sent nothing and everything, which was the same problem. Stevie stepped into the circle and began the argument he had rehearsed. He named the precedent. He named the instrument. Halfway through the second clause, the tall figure at the center of the circle, the one carved half in clean plating and half in burning rock, split further down its seam. A chunk of the ordered shoulder fell. The chaos half kept moving without it. His argument was inside that statue. He could feel the logic slipping, one joint at a time. He heard himself reach for a rule that was not there and put a rule from Order in its place. The clerks wrote it down. The fire on the chaos side went quiet, which meant refusal. Stevie stopped talking. He folded the poster and put it away. "I withdraw the claim," he said. The ordered clerks looked up. The chaos side flared once and closed. He had practiced losing without stopping, and this was that. He walked out of the circle knowing two things. The loophole could not be reproduced from memory. If he wanted the second claim, he had to find someone who still carried the logic he had lost, and he already knew where to start looking. His soul twin shared his blood and, once, his certainty.
