Chapter 5

Stevie lifted the lid. Light spilled from the lamp's throat, cold and blue. Djinn rose out of it, small and sharp-eyed, a jester's hat drooping over one ear. Their true name was gone. Stevie could see the absence in them, like a room with a missing wall. He knew this creature shared his blood. He knew Djinn still held the certainty he had traded away a year ago. He needed one true memory from them. Only that could restore the internal logic of chaos magic and let him claim both courts. "You came for what I kept," Djinn said. Their voice was flat and exact. "The warm thing. You buried it in me before you gave it up." "I need it back," Stevie said. "One clear memory. The certainty." Djinn's form flickered. Threads unraveled from their edges, drifting loose like a mind coming apart. "Then come inside," they said. "But mind the count. My memories run in threads. Most are false. One is true. Touch the wrong one and you carry a lie into the ritual." Stevie stepped into the lamp's light. The inside was a tangle of glowing fibers, thousands of them, each humming a different note. Sophia followed, guitar in hand. She stopped at the edge and listened, her head tilted like a radio finding a station. "They're all singing," she said. "But not in tune. Only one sits right in the chest." Stevie reached for a thread. It showed him a memory of certainty, whole and warm. His hand shook. It felt true. But Djinn's eyes went dark. "Wrong," Djinn said. "That one lies best. It shows you what you want." Stevie pulled back. He could not tell true from false. Every thread felt real to him. He had given up the very sense that would have known. "Play it," Sophia said. She raised the guitar and struck a low note. The threads shivered. Most kept their crooked hum. One thread, near the floor, answered her note clean and answered it whole. It matched. "There," she said. "That one's tuned right." Stevie closed his hand on it. Warmth ran up his arm. He felt the internal logic of chaos magic snap back into place, the same structure he had lost. He knew it now. He was sure. But the pull tore threads loose around it. Djinn buckled. Shadows peeled off their form like worn skin. Their shape thinned to almost nothing. "I'll hold," Djinn said, teeth set. "Name or no name. Take it and go." Stevie stumbled out of the lamp with the certainty burning in his chest. He had what the ritual demanded. But Djinn stood diminished behind him, one memory poorer, barely holding their form. His soul twin had paid for his surety. And Stevie could feel it already fading at the edges, like water through his fingers. He had days. Maybe less. He turned toward the courts.
