Chapter 1

Stitch pressed his ear to the crashed red spacecraft and heard nothing. His cousin had been inside three days ago. Now the cockpit was empty, the hull cold, and Stitch had no idea who had taken him. Family was everything. Losing one meant hunting until he found them. But he could not hunt a trail that did not exist. He climbed out and dropped into the grass. The willow tree above him swayed, its long branches brushing the wreck. Stitch had searched every panel twice. He kicked a loose plate and it clanged. No map. No note. No scent he could follow. He sat down hard and pounded the dirt with both fists. "Stop wrecking things," Lilo said behind him. Stitch spun. The girl stood at the edge of the shade, arms crossed, red dress bright against the green. She was the one human who never flinched at his claws or his temper. She had chosen him when everyone else called him a monster. Now she walked straight to the ruined ship and looked inside like it owed her an answer. "He's gone," Stitch growled. "No trail. Nothing." "There's always something." Lilo reached under the pilot seat and pulled out a plush duck. Its fabric was torn, its seams frayed, cotton poking through the patches. She held it up. "This is yours. From before." Stitch froze. He knew that duck. His cousin had carried it since they were small. He took it in both hands, and his claws pressed the soft belly. Something crackled inside. He ripped the seam wider. A folded scrap of foil fell out, thin and silver. Numbers glowed faintly across it, alive with a slow pulse. Stitch had seen marks like these on old star charts. Coordinates. "Someone hid this," Lilo whispered. "On purpose." Stitch held the foil to the light. The numbers pointed off-world. Far off-world. His cousin had left a breadcrumb, hoping Stitch would find it before anyone else did. His chest tightened. The trail was real. He finally had a place to start. Then the foil warmed in his palm. The numbers flickered, then flashed twice, fast. Stitch's ears flattened. He had triggered it. The message was not just a map. It was a beacon, and now it was broadcasting. Above the willow, a hum grew in the sky. Not close yet. But coming. Lilo looked up. "Stitch. What did you do?" He stuffed the duck and the foil against his chest and grabbed her hand. He had his lead at last. He also had whoever took his cousin now hunting the same signal, straight toward him. "Run," he said, and pulled her into the trees.
