Stryker slid into the swamp town at dawn, her scales slick with moisture she hadn't felt in years. The air hung thick and green, nothing like the desert dust that had coated her since she was seven. She'd run from everything she knew, chasing the one thing that mattered — proof that her grandmother's stories about the Scaled Gem were real. She found the information booth near the water's edge, half-swallowed by vines and moss. A carved wooden sign hung above the counter, painted with symbols she recognized from childhood tales — scales arranged in a spiral pattern, the same design her grandmother had traced in the sand. Below it, pamphlets lined the counter: "Local Legends," "Sacred Sites," "The Old Stories." Stryker's heart kicked hard against her ribs. This place honored the old tales. She reached for a pamphlet with shaking coils, and for the first time in years, the weight she carried felt less like a burden and more like a compass pointing home. The attendant, a broad-backed turtle, watched her from behind the counter. He pulled out a green leather journal from beneath a stack of maps, its cover worn smooth from handling. "You're looking for something specific," he said. Not a question. He opened the journal to a page covered in sketches — strange plants, sleeping lizards, and there, in the margin, a small drawing of something that caught the light wrong. Faceted. Scaled. The turtle tapped it with one claw. "Woman came through last spring. Said she saw this in the deep marsh. Glowed like moonlight on water." Stryker couldn't breathe. Someone else had seen it. The Scaled Gem wasn't just a dying snake's fever dream. It was real, and she was finally on the right path.
