Sugarfoot kneaded dough with steady paws, his flour-dusted apron tight across his chest. Forty-three years ago, his wife bought every one of his terrible biscuits and saw something worth keeping. She handled the coins and contracts while he worked the ovens. But now some noble was spreading filth about her through town, calling her names Sugarfoot wouldn't repeat. His jaw clenched as he folded the dough harder. He'd been called beast and monster his whole life. He could take it. But nobody talked about his wife that way. The morning rush had ended hours ago. Sugarfoot wiped his paws on his apron and looked around the bakery. Cobblestones lined the walls, purple gems catching the light between patches of ancient moss. His wife had picked this place years back when certain folks said she shouldn't work beside him anymore. She made it beautiful anyway. Travelers stopped here every morning for pastries, and they paid good coin. The noble came here too, twice a week, always smiling like butter wouldn't melt. Tomorrow morning, Sugarfoot would be waiting. He'd face the man right here where everyone could watch. No more whispers. No more poison. Just two men and the truth, spoken plain where honor got decided. Sugarfoot ran his paw along the pastry counter. Grey stones formed its base, purple gems set into the surface like stars. Cookies lined the display in neat rows. His wife had taught him how to arrange them so customers would see the best ones first. She'd taught him numbers too, back when he was just a young colt who could barely read. The noble thought he could destroy what they'd built with lies. Thought a baker with long ears and a tail wouldn't fight back. Tomorrow would prove him wrong. Sugarfoot would defend her honor in front of everyone who came for their morning bread. He'd show them all what forty-three years of love looked like when someone tried to spit on it.
