Chapter 1

Sylphina Meadowdance stood at the edge of the dead grove and knew she could not wake it alone. Years ago, her nymph kin danced here and the trees answered. Then the regime outlawed her kind. Soldiers burned the clearing and scattered the dancers. Now the grove slept, its roots gray, its brook silent. To wake it, the old dance needed many feet, not one pair. Sylphina had returned to reclaim this place. But she did not know if a single cousin still breathed. She pressed her bare foot to the cold soil and tried a step anyway. The ground gave nothing back. No hum, no green. She stopped, her chest tight. One dancer was a dropped stitch, not a spell. "You'll wear a hole in the dirt before it answers," said a voice behind her. Sylphina spun. An old man leaned on a walking stick at the treeline. White hair spilled past his shoulders. A brass medallion hung at his chest, marked with a symbol she half remembered. She knew him by reputation only. Aldwin Thornwick, the grove's exiled historian. The regime had driven him out for recording what her people were. "You knew this place before," she said. It was not a question. "I wrote it down while your kin still laughed here." He limped closer and studied the gray roots. His jaw tightened. "They didn't kill the grove. They emptied it. There's a difference." "Then tell me my kin are alive," Sylphina said. "I need them to dance. Without them the grove stays dead." Aldwin reached into his coat and drew out a small glass jar. Inside, a tiny fairy pressed her palms to the walls, wings glowing pale blue. "This little one speaks the old tongue," he said. "The fairies watched where everyone fled. I've asked her three nights running. Last night she finally answered." Sylphina's breath caught. "And?" He uncorked the jar. The fairy rose, spilling faint light between them. She chirped in a language Sylphina didn't know. Aldwin listened, his brow low. "She says your kin scattered north," he translated slowly. "To the marsh country beyond the river. Not dead. Hidden." He looked up. "At least a dozen. Maybe more." Relief hit Sylphina so hard her knees bent. Her cousins lived. The dance was possible. She could reclaim this ground. Then Aldwin closed his hand over the fairy, and his face changed. "There's a cost," he said. "The fairies only whisper truth for a price, and the marsh they fled to isn't empty. The regime hunts nymphs there now. They set traps in the reeds." He met her eyes. "If you go north to gather your kin, you walk straight into the ground they patrol hardest." Sylphina looked at the dead roots, then at the dark line of trees that led north. Her kin were alive. But to bring them home, she would have to cross the very country built to catch them.
