Back at her camp, Sylva unfolded the keeper's note by lantern light. The surface was not paper but a thin carved tablet, its face crowded with spiraling symbols that caught the flame and glowed soft gold. She traced one curl with her thumb. She did not know a single mark. She turned the tablet over and back. No legend. No key. The keeper had handed her a door and no name for the lock. Three days, and she could not even read which way to step past the tree line. At dawn she walked the herd toward the eastern boundary, where an old abandoned cart sat half-swallowed by brush. She had passed it a hundred times. She had never looked behind it. This morning she did. A weathered stone post stood there, leaning, mossed at the base. Its carved symbols were soft with age — and they matched the ones glowing on the tablet in her pack. She set the tablet against the post. Same spirals. Same curling strokes. She still could not read them, but she could match shape to shape. One mark on the post pointed her eye along a faint line of broken ground, the kind a cart wheel leaves and a season hides. She followed it twenty paces and found a second post, smaller, tilted, the same script worn across its face. Sylva stood between the two markers and felt the bearing settle under her boots. She could not translate the words. She did not need to. The system was a chain, post to post, and she had found the first two links. That was a starting heading. That was enough. She walked back to the deer with the tablet warm in her hand. Two days left. She had a direction now, even if she could not name it.
