Chapter 1

Sylva Stormwhisper hid behind a snow-heavy pine and watched two hikers stumble down her forest trail. She wanted one thing more than anything: to make them hear her words. Every human who wandered here only heard barking or wind. She had tried for years. She was trying again now. "Please, the ice ahead is thin," she called. "Turn back before you fall." The taller hiker frowned at the sky. The shorter one zipped his coat higher. Neither looked at her. To them, Sylva was only a strange dog-shaped shadow. Her chest tightened. The forest felt her frustration at once. Wind screamed through the branches. Ice climbed the trunks in seconds. Icicles cracked off the pines and shattered near the hikers' boots. Both men shouted and ran. Sylva chased after them, calling apologies, but her panic made the storm worse. Sleet stung their backs until they vanished down the slope. She sank into the snow. The storm answered her mood again, like it always did. Every time she got close, her own feelings drove the humans off. A warm shape pressed against her side. It was the wolfcat, the one creature whose calm could steady the whole forest. Its striped coat glowed with every color at once. Sylva buried her face in its fur. Slowly her breathing slowed. The wind eased. The falling sleet thinned to soft flakes. "I keep scaring them," she whispered. "How do I stop?" The wolfcat nudged something at her throat. A necklace hung there, one her mother had left her. Its round pendant shifted colors as Sylva's mood changed. Now it burned red and jagged. But under the wolfcat's calm, the colors cooled to blue and settled into a steady knot. Sylva understood. The necklace matched the forest. When she was calm, so was the weather. She could not beg the humans to listen. She had to stay still enough that the storm never rose. A third human appeared on the trail below. This one walked alone and slow, studying the frozen pines. Sylva's heart jumped, and the pendant flickered toward orange. Wind stirred the branches. She pressed her paw to the pendant and pictured the wolfcat's warmth. She breathed. The colors sank back to blue. The wind died. The forest went quiet. Sylva stepped onto the trail in the falling snow. "Hello," she said softly. "Can you hear me?" The human stopped. He tilted his head, confused, and heard only a dog. But he did not run. He crouched and held out his hand. No storm came. And as the snow drifted between them, a faint shimmer of dust rose from the human's coat. It glowed. Sylva had never seen it glow before. She stared, her heart pounding, and this time the wind stayed calm. She had finally kept the storm still. But the glowing dust told her something new: this human might actually understand her. She had to reach him before he left.
