Chapter 1

Sylvanna Thornwick knelt in the dirt and dug her fingers into the roots, chasing a power she had spent her whole life pretending not to feel. The white stag had led her here, past every path she knew, to a willow with leaves the color of fire. Beneath it lay a stone disc, carved with sigils and strangled in old roots. She knew this seal. Her grandmother had warned her about it. Fae blood made it, her family kept it, and no Thornwick was ever meant to touch it. But the magic in her veins pulled harder than any warning. She scraped the roots away. The sigils glowed faint red beneath her hands. A thorn caught her palm. One drop of blood struck the carving. The seal cracked. Light tore up her arms, hot and bright, and something inside her chest broke open. Her magic woke all at once, flooding through her wild and green and ancient, until she could barely breathe around it. The white stag lowered its silver antlers and bowed. “You should not have bled here.” The voice came from the water. A nymph rose from the pool near the roots, silver-haired and pale as moonlight on glass. Her eyes fixed on the broken seal with naked fear. “Child, do you know what your blood has freed? Something ancient slept beneath these woods. Your gift woke it.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “Run.” Sylvanna did not run. The ground split open. Heat rolled from the crack in a wave, carrying smoke and the scent of cedar. A shape climbed from the darkness below. He was enormous, taller than any man she had ever seen, broad enough to blot out the fireleaf glow behind him. Black horns curved through dark hair. Chains of ancient magic smoked around his wrists, snapping one by one as he straightened. Then he looked at her. Red eyes. Sharp mouth. Too beautiful for something that had crawled out of the earth. The nymph disappeared beneath the water. Sylvanna’s breath caught. His gaze moved over her slowly, not hurried, not shy, and heat climbed beneath her skin in answer. She hated that he could see it. Hated even more that part of her wanted him to keep looking. The demon king inhaled as if tasting the air. “Thornwick blood.” His voice was low enough that she felt it more than heard it. “Your line buried me.” He stepped closer. “And now your line frees me.” Her heart slammed hard against her ribs. She should have backed away. Instead, she held her ground while every instinct in her body argued with every sensible thought in her head. “I’m Sylvanna,” she said. “And I didn’t come here to free you.” “No.” His eyes dropped briefly to her mouth. “You came to wake yourself.” Another step. The heat of him reached her face now. Smoke, cedar, something darker. Dangerous. Addictive. “Vaelor,” he said. “Remember it.” His hand rose toward her cheek. Sylvanna went still. His fingers stopped a breath from her skin. Close enough that every nerve beneath her cheek seemed to wake for him. He watched her reaction. Slowly, one corner of his mouth lifted. “Fear?” he murmured. Sylvanna raised her chin. “Don’t flatter yourself.” His gaze dropped to her lips again. “I wasn’t.” Her stomach tightened. Vaelor lowered his hand without touching her, and somehow that was worse. The seal was broken. Her power roared awake in her blood. The demon her ancestors had buried stood free before her, looking at her like he already knew every secret she had not yet admitted to herself. And Sylvanna understood the truth too late. She had not opened a lock. She had opened a door. And some reckless, traitorous part of her wanted to know exactly where it led.
