Chapter 1

Sylvara Moonwhisper stood between the stranger and her sleeping elder, and she did not move. The old unicorn had slept for years at the center of her glade, its breath faint, its horn gone gray. While it slept, the forest's magic faded. Leaves dropped early. Springs ran thin. Sylvara had tried every rite she knew to wake the elder. None worked. So she kept watch, suspicious of anyone who came to the glade wanting something from her herd. This one had walked in that morning. A worn brown cloak, dark hair, a quick smile. He said his name was Diaran Shadesmere. He said he knew how to wake the elder. "You know nothing," Sylvara said. Her crown of unicorn hair and pale blossoms caught the dim light. Behind her, the rainbow herd shifted, manes of green and blue and rose. "Men who come here want horn or hair. Tell me what you want, and tell me true." Diaran pulled a book from under his cloak. The cover was cracked and stained. He held it out, but kept his feet still. "Belonged to a merchant. He's dead now. It tells how to wake things that sleep." Sylvara did not take it. "Why bring it here?" "Because your elder's the thing it talks about." He opened the book. The pages were covered in a language she could not read. Halfway through, the neat handwriting turned shaky, the letters pressed deep and uneven. He touched that page. "The man who wrote this woke something once. After that, his hand changed. He got scared." Sylvara watched his face. His smile was gone. "And you? Have you done this before?" For a moment he said nothing. His jaw tightened. "Once." He closed the book. "It went wrong. I don't talk about it." That was the truth. She heard it in how flat his voice went. A liar would have spun a story. This man shut a door instead. He was afraid, and he had come anyway. "You could ruin my herd," she said. "You could ruin all of it." "I could," he said. "But your forest is dying with the elder asleep. You've got no other plan. I'm the only one who's read this." He lifted the book again. "I can't read it alone. I need you." Sylvara looked past him to the elder. Its ribs rose, barely. Each season it grew fainter. She had guarded her herd so long that she had guarded it toward death. Caution had become its own slow poison. She stepped aside. "Come," she said. "But if you lift a blade near my herd, the forest itself will hold you. Do you understand?" "I understand." Diaran crossed the stone into her glade. Sylvara shut the gate behind him. She had chosen to trust a man who would not name his worst mistake. Now they had to read a book no one living could.
