Chapter 1

Sylvara Nexlight stood on the mountain wall and counted the empty roads below. Three roads led to her realm. Every one belonged to the warlord now. His raiders held the passes with stolen machines, and no clan could reach her throne. She had sworn to unite every scattered cyber-elf clan under her rule. But a queen who cannot be reached rules only her own walls. The chrome ports along her arms glowed as she gripped the stone. Her raven landed on the parapet beside her. Its wings burned neon pink and blue in the dark. The bird carried a torn scrap of cloth in its beak. Sylvara took it and knew the color. It came from the northern clan's banners. Their messenger had tried the high road and never arrived. That made three envoys lost in a week. "Send an army and he burns the clans out of spite," said a voice from the shadow of the wall. "Send no one and they forget you exist." Silven Nightwhisper stepped into the torchlight. She was Sylvara's scout, the one who moved where soldiers could not. Her cloak swallowed her frame, and her green eyes did not blink. Sylvara trusted few people. She trusted this one because Silven never softened the truth. Most who served a queen did. "The warlord wants me to fight him where he is strong," Sylvara said. "On the roads." She turned from the wall. "So I will not use the roads." She led Silven down to the armory. There she lifted a warblade from its cradle. The plasma edge woke with a hum and threw blue light across both their faces. "His raiders guard the passes. They do not guard the ridge above them. One elf could climb it. One elf could reach the northern clan and bring them down behind his lines." Silven took the blade. She tested its weight, then slid it across her back. "You are sending your best scout, not your envoy." "I am sending the only person who can survive the climb," Sylvara said. "Bring the northern clan to the eastern pass at dawn. I will strike the warlord from the front. He cannot hold two directions at once." Silven left before moonset. Sylvara waited on the wall through the cold hours, watching the eastern pass. At dawn, torches spilled down the ridge the warlord had left unguarded. The northern clan came, and the raven wheeled above them. Sylvara led her soldiers into the pass and hit the raiders as they turned to face the hills. The grip broke. By midday the passes lay open, and the warlord's men fled into the deep country. The roads were hers again. But the northern clan chief did not kneel. He planted his banner in the mud and looked at Sylvara. "You freed the road," he said. "That buys you my ear. It does not buy you my crown." The other clans would be watching what she offered him next. She then challenged him to a duel and defeated him with lethal precision, as a message to all the other clans.
