Chapter 1

Sylvara Nightweaver wanted one man, and the whole grove now stood between her and him. She was an elven sorceress, black hair loose to her waist, and she had come to Pussywillow Grove for a woodcutter named Doran. He had sworn himself immune to magic. No charm touched him. No whisper bent his mind. That stubbornness was the only reason she still wanted him. But this morning her plan had cracked. She walked the market path and felt eyes follow her. A baker pulled his child inside. Two women crossed to the far side of the road. One hissed the word "enchantress." Sylvara stopped at the well and listened. The story was already old. A woman prowled the grove, they said. She bewitched good men. She stole hearts with potions. Every head turned her way confirmed it. If Doran heard this, he would bolt, and no spell could follow a man who ran. She needed to know the source before the rumor reached him. So she followed the gossip back, stall by stall, until a spice-seller pointed down the lane. The seller sat on an overturned crate outside the warm-lit lodge at the forest edge. A traveling woman in tattered, layered robes, a worn scarf wound high around her throat. She held a dried cannabis sprig to her nose, sniffed it, and grinned at three listeners. "The enchantress keeps a vial of pink glass," the woman said. "One drop and you love her forever. I saw it myself." Her listeners leaned closer. She was enjoying this. She spun lies the way other people breathed. Sylvara's stomach dropped. She did keep such a vial. No one had seen it. The woman was guessing, and guessing well, and that made her dangerous. Sylvara did not use magic. Magic was the accusation. Instead she stepped into the circle and crouched beside the storyteller. "That's a good tale," Sylvara said. "Tell me who paid you to tell it." The woman's grin faltered. Up close, Sylvara saw the fear under the boldness. This was a woman who sold stories for coin and moved on. "No one paid me," the woman said, too fast. "Then you'll trade it for free." Sylvara drew a single silver coin and set it on the crate. "New story. The enchantress left the grove last night. Frightened off. Gone for good." The woman stared at the coin. Her listeners waited. Then she laughed, loud and easy, and swept the silver into her sleeve. "Did you hear?" she called to the lane. "The witch has fled! Ran at the first sign of good folk watching!" The words spread the way the first lie had. By dusk the grove breathed easier. Suspicion drained from the path. Sylvara walked home unwatched. But she had bought peace with a confession dressed as rumor. Now the whole grove believed she was gone. Doran believed it too. To reach him at all, she would have to be a ghost.
