Chapter 4

—because the possibility that someone else is hunting what she needs fills her with something colder than calculation. She spent centuries believing she was the only one left who understood where to look, the only one who remembered the old patterns. Now there's competition, and competition means risk. Risk means the cure could slip through her fingers into someone else's hands. Helga leans forward, firelight catching the hard lines of her face. "So we hunt him together," she says. "You find your magic. I find my father's sword. We both get what we came for." She's already committed, already seeing this wizard as the obstacle between her and her inheritance. Sylvara watches her daughter's expression and recognizes the same iron will she sees when she looks in still water. This woman won't stop until she has what belongs to her. The realization settles in Sylvara's chest like a blade finding its mark—she just gave Helga a purpose that aligns perfectly with her own, and the lie she told has become the truth neither of them can ignore. Sylvara nods once, sealing the agreement. She tucks the medallion into her pack beside the journal, her mind already working through the pattern. Someone is excavating the old sites, following the same network she's traced through centuries of searching. Someone who knows enough to recognize what matters and kills anyone who might follow. The temple three days north isn't just another ruin anymore. It's a test to see if this wizard exists, and if he does, whether he's already taken what she needs. The curse wraps tighter around her thoughts, reminding her of every vulnerability she wasn't built to carry. She needs that magic before someone else claims it. Needs it enough to use her own daughter as a weapon to get there. By morning they're packed and moving north again, but something has shifted between them. Helga walks with purpose now, checking the silver medallion's runes against landmarks as though she's memorizing a enemy's face. Sylvara follows close enough to study the way her daughter moves—efficient, focused, deadly when she needs to be. The alliance was always temporary, but now it has teeth. They're not just hunting buried magic anymore. They're hunting whoever is hunting it first. And when they find him, Sylvara will take everything he's collected, break whatever she needs to break, and become whatever the curse demands she become to end it. The wizard she invented to manipulate Helga is real, and that changes nothing except the body count.
