Chapter 3

The debt was paid, but Tariel Kavtaradze slept no easier. Mesarthim's warning stayed lodged in their chest. The tribe took from the whole forest, and one settled grudge would not protect them from the next. Tariel needed more than a single offering. They needed a lasting bond with the spirits, a peace that would hold when the next crisis came. Words could not build that. Only the spirit realm could. So Tariel knelt at the altar and drummed until the floor fell away. The pale curtain of light parted before them, shimmering between the living world and the dead. Tariel stepped through the threshold into a forest of white trees. Their branches drooped like willows, draped in icicle moss that glittered in a light with no sun. Tariel walked deeper. The cold pressed close. Then something moved between the trunks, low and black, tracking them. It made no sound. Tariel's breath came short. The thing had no shape they could name, only hunger and a slow, circling patience. A dread spirit. It smelled the fear on them and drew nearer. Tariel ran. Roots caught their boots. The dark shape gained. Tariel turned to face it and found nothing to fight, only cold reaching for their throat like the fever that had drained the children. Then the white trees leaned in. Their branches wove together, a cage of pale wood between Tariel and the dread spirit. The icicle moss brightened. The dark thing hissed and pulled back from the light. Mesarthim stepped from behind the trunks. Her white skin caught the glow, and the small antlers rose from her hair. She did not run. She placed one hand on the nearest tree, calm as still water. "They shelter you because you honored one of their kind," she said. "But this spirit hungers for what is not bound to the forest. It will hunt you until you give the woods a reason to keep you." "Tell me the reason," Tariel said. "Not an offering that fades. A vow. Bind yourself to them, and they bind themselves to you." Tariel understood. They knelt among the roots and pressed both palms to the frozen ground. "I speak for my people," they said. "What we take, we will answer for. Every season, I will honor you first. Hold my tribe as you hold me now." The white trees shivered. The moss dropped from their branches and settled over Tariel's shoulders like a mantle. Warmth spread through the cold. The dread spirit shrank into the dark and was gone. Mesarthim watched the trees fold their branches back. "They have accepted. The forest is yours to speak for now." Her pale eyes held Tariel's. "But a vow is a weight. They will hold you to every word." Tariel woke at the altar. The moss still clung to their coat, real and cold. The bond was sealed. Now they carried a promise the whole forest would remember.
