Chapter 1

Terren Stoneheart was fading, and the only cure was an enemy. Terren is the earth itself, alive in every root and stone. But when people forget the earth, Terren thins like fog. A field near here became a parking lot last month, and no one wept. Terren felt the loss in its own body, a hollow spreading through the ground. So Terren decided on something no earth essence had ever tried. Terren would make peace with water, air, and fire, and bind them in a pact that could not break. Peace would mean more believers, and more belief would mean Terren stayed real. Water came first, because water hated Terren most. For ages the tide clawed away coastlines while soil buried springs. Terren needed to speak with Marina Tidecaller, the water essence. But everywhere the two forces met, one destroyed the other. Soil drowned in the sea. Rivers choked under mud. There was no ground where both could stand. Terren knelt at a low place where fresh water pooled in cracked rock. "I need a message carried," Terren said. A river otter climbed onto the stone and shook itself. Its bright eyes fixed on Terren. "You move through both worlds. Tell the tide I want to talk. Tell her I built a place where neither of us drowns." The otter slipped into the current and vanished downstream. Then Terren went to work. On the edge where land met brackish water, Terren shaped a marsh. Terren pushed up layered ledges of earth. Reeds rose along the rims. Shallow pools filled between them, and the tide slid in gently, held but not fought. Water and soil touched here without war. Along one basin Terren pressed seeds into wet mud. Green watercress sprouted fast, roots hanging into clear water, leaves floating on top. Proof, Terren thought. Earth can feed water instead of smothering it. Last, Terren raised a round pool ringed with weathered stone. Terren guided seawater into the basin and let it settle. The water stayed. The stone held it like cupped hands, calm and clear. Here was the offering: earth holding water without swallowing it. Terren waited. The marsh rippled. Then the tide surged high into the reeds, and a voice rose from the pool. "You built me a cage," Marina said. Her shape formed in the still basin, sharp and cold. "Stone around water. That is what your kind always does." "It is a place we can both stand," Terren said. "Look. The cress lives. Your water is clean." Marina's surface trembled. She looked at the floating leaves, the held pool, the reeds that bent but did not break. Slowly the anger drained from her voice. "You made neutral ground," she said. "So you truly mean to talk." "I do." "Then talk," Marina said. "But water does not forget three years without the moon. If you want my pact, first help me find what stole the tides."
