Chapter 1

The summons arrived pinned to Thalia Thornbreak's door with a black-fletched arrow. She read it twice. Her parents wanted her home in three days to accept the crown they had chosen for her, and the husband who came with it. She wanted the crown too. She just wanted to win it herself, in the trials, the way rulers of the forest realm once did. She tore the message down. Refuse outright, and the court would call her a traitor. Obey, and she would kneel for a crown that was never truly hers. She ran instead. By dusk she reached the old ruin swallowed by vines, a castle no elf had claimed in a hundred years. Thick roots split its stone steps. Green tendrils covered every window. Here she could wait out the three days. If she never reached the ceremony, they could not crown her. No ceremony, no arranged king. She unrolled her blanket in the empty hall and told herself this was a plan. A voice broke the quiet. "You always did hide instead of fight." Thalia spun. The High Grove Priestess stood in the doorway, silver hair threaded with white blossoms, bare feet silent on the cracked floor. Sylvara Thornweave had blessed Thalia's naming as a child. Now the old priestess looked at her the way she looked at a bird with a broken wing. "You can't tell them I'm here," Thalia said. "I won't need to." Sylvara stepped inside. "Hiding makes you a traitor as surely as refusing. Your absence is answer enough." Thalia's stomach dropped. She had thought she was buying time. She was only proving them right. "There is another road," Sylvara said. "Only the Grove can sanctify a coronation. No priestess, no lawful crown. I could stand before the whole court and object. Publicly. Lawfully." "Why would you?" "Because a crown pressed onto an unwilling head rots the whole forest." Sylvara held out her weathered hand. "But I will not do it for a girl who runs. Come to the ceremony. Stand there in the open. Then I speak." Thalia looked at the offered hand. Going back meant walking straight into the trap she had fled. It also meant a chance to break the arrangement in front of everyone, with the one voice that could stop it. She rolled her blanket back up. "I'll be there," she said. Sylvara's fingers closed around hers, dry and strong. "Then we have very little time. Your parents expect a bride. They will not expect a challenge to the law itself." Thalia left the ruined castle at first light, walking toward home instead of away from it. She was no longer hiding. She was going to the coronation to break it, and a priestess of the Grove would speak for her. But her parents held the ceremony, the court, and every guard between here and the throne. If Sylvara's objection failed, Thalia would kneel by nightfall.
