Chapter 8

Her father's words hung in the silent hall. Thalia stood before the high seats, blade point-down, the antler ringing gone quiet on the stone. The paste Sylvara gave her was failing. She felt the fire creep back into her ribs. Her knees began to shake. If she fell now, they would forget the beast she killed and remember only the girl who dropped. She locked her eyes on a carved pillar across the room to steady herself. Through the tall windows she saw the courtyard trees, their purple blossoms hanging in long clusters. She breathed slow. Slow looks like strength. She would not answer her father's smile with a fall. A voice broke the quiet. "May a wounded soul rest before her court?" Sylvara walked from the shadows near the doors. Barefoot, white hair braided with leaves, she crossed the floor without hurry. The nobles parted for her. She was the priestess whose written word had halted this very crowning. Now she moved to Thalia's side. "She has stood long enough to prove her point," Sylvara said. "Let her sit and prove she can outlast you all." Sylvara set her shoulder under Thalia's arm. She did it as if adjusting a robe, not catching a falling girl. "Lean," she whispered. "Slow. I have you." Thalia leaned. Together they moved to the base of the dais steps. Thalia did not collapse into the seat. She lowered herself, blade still in hand, chin still level. The court read it as choice, not weakness. Another figure pushed through the far doors. Marcus. Dirty, limping, one arm bound in a torn strip of cloth. He had stayed behind to draw off her father's riders. She thought him captured or dead. He caught her eye across the hall and gave a short nod, the same nod he gave before every fight in the woods. "The riders held me three days," he called out, loud enough for the seats. "I told them the truth. She killed the beast. I watched her do it." A murmur moved through the nobles. A witness had come. Thalia found her voice from where she sat. "I need no crown handed to me today," she said. "The objection stands. So let it stand. I will earn my seat with proof no law can erase." She lifted the antler again, one-handed, steady. "Ask your riders. Ask him. Ask the wound." Her father sank back into his high seat. He did not smile now. He had planned to break her with a legal wall. Instead the court whispered her name with respect, and a witness stood at the door. Sylvara pressed the clay pot into Thalia's palm. "You held the room," she murmured. "But your father will not fight fair next. He will find a new door to shut." Thalia closed her fingers around the pot. She had kept their respect. Now she had to keep it long enough to force the objection open.
