Chapter 4

The temple opened, but the Architect saw the danger before the first trial began. The boy, Lukas, stood on the cracked stone floor while the Wanderer showed him how to set his feet. The snow sprite warmed the cold from the room. Yet the Architect looked deeper, past skin and bone. A thin thread of shadow still clung inside the boy. The rival's poison had not been fully driven out. It curled near his heart like a splinter. If the trials pushed him hard, that splinter could wake and twist him from within. The Architect did not warn the Wanderer at once. A god who solves every danger teaches nothing. But this was poison, not skill. No amount of training would burn it out. So the towering hooded figure turned toward the temple's deeper halls. Somewhere in the old world grew a guardian pine, bonded to winged badgers. Those creatures had driven the shadow from the boy once before. They could finish the work. The Architect could not pass the mortal doors himself. He searched the carved passages with his sight instead, reaching through stone and root. Far below, where the air turned damp, the pale spiders of the underdeep spun webs across a buried grove. A single young pine grew there, its needles touched with living light. The badgers slept in its branches. The spiders guarded the grove without knowing why. The Architect spoke into the Wanderer's mind. "The boy carries poison still. It will turn him mid-trial. Below us grows a pine that can purge it. Spiders hold the grove." The Wanderer set down his mug. He looked at Lukas, then at the dark stair. "How long do I have?" "Until the trials strain him. Not long." The Wanderer took Lukas by the shoulder. "We go down. Stay behind me." The boy scowled but followed, moving with the same slow, careful stride as the man. They descended into the wet dark. The spiders came fast, legs clicking on stone, red eyes bright. The Wanderer swung his pack like a club and cracked the lead one apart. Lukas drove his boot into another. They fought to the grove and reached the small glowing pine. The Architect gathered the badgers awake. They burst from the branches on ember-tipped wings and swarmed the boy. Lukas froze. Light poured over him. The badgers pulled the shadow thread out through his chest in a thin black ribbon. It hissed and burned to nothing in the pine's glow. Lukas gasped and dropped to his knees, clean at last. "It's gone," the Wanderer said. He pulled the boy up. The poison was purged. But the Architect felt the grove tremble. The badgers had scattered, their nest torn open. And far above, through the temple's broken mouth, the rival's cold attention turned downward. The shadow could not track the boy. But it had just felt its poison die.
