Chapter 6

The Architect widened his sight across the frozen slope. Snow curled over the broken steps. A figure climbed toward the Elemental Trial Arena with no haste. He knew her at once. Vespera Nightbane, the rival's hunter, a girl who had once fought the dark and then let it fill her. Black smoke ran under her pale skin. Her eyes burned hollow purple. She carried two jagged daggers of shadow-glass. The rival had sent her to claim what the Architect protected. The Architect had no mortal eyes on the approach. He could not lift a blade himself. But he could still speak, and he could still open a door. He reached far, past the crossing he knew well, and pulled a different one wide. Beyond the temple's outer steps the air split. A ring of glowing keys jangled at a woman's hip as she stepped through. Duna Ashwick planted her boots in the snow. Her patched fur coat caught the wind. She guards the way between worlds, and she turns away anyone she does not trust. The Architect had never bent her before. He bent her now. "A hunter climbs to the boy," he said into the cold. "You hold the doors. Hold this one." Duna looked up the broken stair. Vespera stopped ten paces off. The two women took each other's measure in silence. "You're not crossing," Duna said. Her voice stayed even. "Not past me." "Then you die on the step," Vespera said. She drew one dagger. Smoke tore from her shoulder as the blade left its sheath. The Architect felt the price it took from her, a sliver of the girl gone into the steel. Vespera lunged. Duna swept a glowing key from her ring and jammed it into the empty air. A door snapped open between them. The dagger vanished into it and struck nothing. Duna wrenched the key. The door slammed shut on the girl's wrist. Shadow-glass cracked. Vespera hissed and pulled back, one dagger shattered to black dust in the snow. She did not charge again. She measured the keeper, the humming keys, the doors that could open under any step. The temple was no longer a quiet door she could slip through. "The keeper guards this one," Vespera said, flat. "I'll tell him." She turned down the stair and the smoke trailed after her. The approach was held. The Architect had used Duna to guard the door his hands could not. But Vespera had gone back to the rival, and she carried word. The rival now knew the keeper of worlds stood with the boy. The dark would not send one girl next time. It would send a force built to break a door, and the Architect had just shown it exactly where the door stood.
